Effects of ozone levels on climate through Earth history

چکیده
Molecular oxygen in our atmosphere has increased from less than a part per million the Archean Eon, to fraction of percent Proterozoic, and finally modern levels during Phanerozoic. The ozone layer formed with early Proterozoic oxygenation. While itself only minor radiative climatic effects, accompanying important consequences for Earth climate. Using Community System Model (CESM), 3-D general circulation model, we test effects various on Earth's When CO2 is held constant, global mean surface temperature decreases decreasing ozone, maximum drop ~3.5 K at near total removal. By supplementing GCM results 1-D flux calculations, are able which changes responsible this change. We find that change caused mostly by stratosphere being much colder when absent; makes it drier, substantially weakening greenhouse effect. also examine effect structure upper troposphere lower formation clouds, circulation. At low both high clouds become more abundant, due tropospheric stability. These generate opposing short-wave long-wave forcings nearly equal. Hadley jet streams strengthened, while stratospheric polar jets weakened, latter direct consequence temperatures. This work identifies major impacts an piece evolution atmosphere.

“We’re related to the grass”, our biology teacher once proclaimed in his South Tyrolean accent that was at the same time unmistakable and highly liable to impersonation. Our 14-year-old, hormone-clouded minds can perhaps be forgiven for not immediately fathoming the profound scientifi c truth behind this statement, but looking back now, it stuck as poignant way of encapsulating what is perhaps ...
متن کاملOzone and life on the Archaean Earth.
The trace gas ozone, produced in the present-day stratosphere, acts as a screen for UV radiation between 195 and approximately 290 nm, depending on its column abundance. On the anoxic Archaean Earth, such an ozone screen would not have existed. Although the presence of other screens, such as an organic haze, might have ameliorated the UV radiation flux, even assuming the worst-case scenario (no...
متن کاملInteractions and Global Climate Change: Some Lessons from Earth History
Over the last 100 years of the industrial revolution, human civilization has been performing a remarkable experiment on Earth’s climate system. Because of a variety of activities related to population growth and economic development, most notably the burning of fossil fuels, humans have increased the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by approximately 30%. Carbon dioxide is a gre...
متن کاملClimate Change at Yucca Mountain: Lessons from Earth History
Yucca Mountain's suitability as a nuclear waste repository stems largely from its very dry climate and deep water table (Bodvarsson et al. 1999). The facility's ultimate goal is to isolate waste materials for more than ten thousand years (Whipple 1996). And there lies a crucial question: How can we tell whether the climate and hydrologic conditions at Yucca Mountain will be stable enough beyond...
